NIGERIA CALLS ON BRICS TO LEAD CLIMATE JUSTICE AND HEALTH EQUITY AGENDA AT COP30

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has urged BRICS nations to champion a transformative global response to climate change and health inequity ahead of COP30.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ambassador Tuggar stressed the link between planetary and human health, warning that Africa, despite its low emissions, bears the brunt of climate impacts such as flooding, desertification, and rising sea levels in Nigeria. He highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy, the African Carbon Market, and the Great Green Wall initiative.

Ambassador Tuggar called for increased climate financing from BRICS to support sustainable economic growth in the Global South while addressing climate challenges.

On health, he cited the inequities revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic and urged reforms to global health systems. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to South-South cooperation in vaccine production, biotechnology, and healthcare access to prevent climate-induced health crises.

Emphasizing Nigeria’s Long-Term Vision 2050 for renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience, Ambassador Tuggar called for deeper collaboration with BRICS to achieve climate justice, universal health coverage, and pandemic preparedness.

He concluded by urging COP30 to move beyond “sterile and toothless diplomacy,” emphasizing solidarity and collective action as keys to solving global challenges.
